Pack and Mail Reassessment (1/12-14)

Filed under: Pack & Mail, Reassessments — 7:42 pm

Hi everyone!

We had a very busy yet productive three days in Orphanage Club this week! We had three Pack
and Mail workdays, which included shopping and packing boxes to send to 25 poor families in
Taiwan for the Chinese New Year holiday.

On Thursday, January 12th, we went to Carrefour to buy canned goods and other snacks.
Everything went smoothly, and we were able to get enough food to pack into the boxes.

On Friday, January 13th, we went to Di Hua Jie to buy Chinese New Year food such as dried
squid and dried noodles. We had a lot of fun eating sample food along the way, and the Chinese
New Year holiday spirit was definitely in the air that day.

On Saturday, January 14th, we packed the boxes with food, stationary, toiletries, and stuffed
animals to be sent to 25 families for the Chinese New Year holiday.

Thanks to everyone who came and helped out, there was a lot to get done, but we managed to
pack everything in record time, and we had plenty of fun in the process!

Cathwel Boys Outing Reassessment

The Cathwel boys’ outing on January 14th, 2012 was remarkable. In the morning, the members and kids gathered
together to pass out Christmas gifts for the boys. The boys smiled and thanked the chairpersons for preparing the gifts
for them. As there was still time left after this event, we played various small activities like badminton and basketball
at the orphanage. For lunch, we went to the Yuan Shan Hotel Club to eat an assortment of dishes prepared by the chef.
It was sponsored by TAS alumni Betty Lin. The kids were very excited as they walked into the restaurant, enjoying both
the phenomenal atmosphere the fancy tables prepared for them. In the afternoon, the members and kids went back to
Tien Mu to shop for clothes for the New Year; the members helped their kids pick a suitable jacket for the cold weather.
Overall, the outing went very smoothly as all the boys were very full after lunch and extremely satisfied with the clothes
they had bought in the afternoon.

Chung Yi Reassessment (1/08)

Filed under: Chung Yi, Reassessments — 6:38 pm

Dear members,

I think you’re all tired of hearing this but thanks so much for coming
to our outing on Sunday, January 8th! Although there was a delay due
to unforeseen difficulties (sorry about that), we weren’t overly late
for our visit to the fire safety museum. Hopefully the fire
extinguisher spraying, the smoke room and the earthquake machine was
fun and I hope you guys learned some new things at the fire safety
museum…now I know that a fire extinguisher only lasts 10 seconds and
that in some cases, you need to use the fire extinguisher first (to
cool down the fire) and THEN water…

THE BIGGEST thank you goes to Mrs. Pan and Lauren and Kristen for
letting us hold our party at The Regent. I’m sure the Chungyi kids had
an awesome time (in fact, I eavesdropped and heard a girl saying
‘好幸福喔’so that’s definitely a good sign). The food was tasty, fine,
exquisite, delicious, dainty, sweet and overall very pleasing to the
papillae. In short, EVERYTHING ABOUT THE REGENT WAS GREAT. Thank you
so much!

Thank you to all the performers - Renee, Rachel, Terry, Calvin and
Pelix and our Chungyi kids! They were awesome. And we apologize for
our commentaries. They weren’t the best >_< I shudder and wince and
want to writhe on the floor every time I think about it. Now, if you
would all follow me — bury that memory of our MCing into the depths
of our hippocampus, never to be recalled or summoned again…

Thank you to our chaperons - Ms. Koh, Mr. Arnold, Mr. Kim and Ms.
Ma… for well, chaperoning and maintaining order throughout!

Special thanks to our sole alum who attended the outing - Liyip!
Thanks for coming :)

Our next outing is on March 25th (I lied yesterday. It’s not April
25th!!!) But we haven’t planned anything for it just yet
(stillrecuperating from the sheer brilliance of yesterday) So, when
the time nears, we
will be back to beg you all come to Chungyi again. Beware!

Again, THANK YOU EVERYONE TO WHO CAME:

Happy New Year! This is our first Friday Blind School Lesson (1-06-2012) of the year 2012.
We celebrated the end of first semester with the Christmas Party, and now we are starting a
whole new chapter of second semester. Though there were a couple of people arriving late, this
has improved immensely from our first lesson in 2011. People were really enthusiastic about
returning to Blind School and teaching their students.

These are the members who came to January 6th lesson, so they should really be proud of

Hunger Week 11/2011

Filed under: Reassessments — 6:31 pm

Thank you all who helped out with the Hunger Awareness Committee of the TAS Orphanage Club. The Hunger Week of November 2011 has yet again been a great success like those preceding it. In about a week time, we have a fostered a sense of morality and determination in our community. We have united students together to spread awareness of the global issue and financially assist worldwide charities in their continuing efforts to combat food insecurity. Through this experience, we have learned the value of food and how hunger feels. Thank you all students, parents, teachers, administrative members, staff members of the Taipei American School. Your participation has been admirable. Without your support to us, Hunger Week couldn’t have had such a great impact on the school.

One of the notable events during the week is Mr. Hobb’s speech during the Hunger Awareness Assembly, in which he spoke of being “the proud soldier…to fight world hunger.” ~Mr. W. Hobbs 11/17/2011. Mr. Hobbs has once again been a leading figure in students, inspiring them to take action and be determined. Additionally, throughout the Lower Schools, Orphanage Club members have continued to teach lessons to children, who, if having learned the values of not wasting food and cherishing what they have, can grow up to be responsible people. Teachers have also played a great part in the lessons because they have sacrificed class time for an invaluable lesson on Hunger Awareness.

On November 22nd, we raised 54,414 NTD thanks to those who donated. All proceeds go to Oxfam America, World Vision Taiwan, and American Friends Service.
These are the people who helped out at the booths:

Pearl S. Buck Christmas Party (12/17-18)

Filed under: Publicity, Games and Gifts, Chung Yi, Reassessments — 6:17 pm

Hello everybody!
As you may or may not know, the Pearl S. Buck party and workdays is an apex of an OC year at the
end of the first semester. In this huge event, the Pearl S. Buck organization and Orphanage Club work
together to host a wonderful Christmas party in the school cafeteria for ~700 people that the PSB
foundation invited. This year we had quite a successful party.

First of all, we had very productive workdays both on Friday and Saturday. We were able to create
quite the cheery, red, green, festive Christmas atmosphere with many colorful banners and snowflakes
dangling down from the ceilings! Manpower did fluctuate at times and we had to go over the scheduled
time – 5PM, but fortunately not by much. However, the people who stayed after seemed very bonded
afterwards and their help was the reason why ~700 people could enjoy their party on Sunday. We thank
you all deeply from the bottom of our hearts <3

Our sponsors and the PSB people were worried that people wouldn’t show up because of the weather.
Luckily enough, the sun was finally out – a rare sight, considering the sky’s track record of gloomy days -
- and thus the weather was quite nice. On the day of the party, at first, it seemed that we did not have
enough members to go fetch all the food; however, members started to filter in and thankfully, we
had enough hands. In addition to the members, we had college students and other adults who came to
help as well. They helped us serve hard-to-serve foods such as hot soup or coffee. We were very lucky
to have their help! Unlike last year, we had less unhappy children and minor accidents. And unlike last
year, the turkey, spaghetti, and mashed potatoes were actually much more popular than last year. Even
though it seemed like we had fewer people than last year, food consumption was much higher.
In addition to the successful lunch, we also had successful and amazing performances from both TAS
and PSB performers. Thank you to Annette W, Terry C, Calvin M, and might I say so ever humbly –
myself, for their wonderful performances. (Okay, that wasn’t humble at all.) We are sure that your
performances were very enjoyable for our guests! Thank you for volunteering your time and skills

We must realize that sometimes some people are not as fortunate as us students going to TAS and we
should definitely help them in order to “pay it forward”. Many people say know this sad fact and yet
does not do anything about it. Well my friends, let me tell you…Everyone that participated in helping at
the Pearl S. Buck Party actively contributed in helping these many families have a great Christmas party
during the time of giving and love! Hope all of you guys can help make next year even more successful!
Thanks for all the love! <3

Special thanks to our sponsors Mr. Arnold and Ms. Koh for coordinating all the behind-the-scenes work
and negotiations with our multiple restaurants, food shops, etc. They are the unsung heroes who are
never recognized enough. So we would like to thank them once again (we can’t thank them enough) for
all their hard work and love for OC!

Your ChungYi chairpersons,
Pelix K and Tin Tin K

Publicity
This year’s PSB decorations looked fabulous. It’s amazing how much the cafeteria transformed in a
span of only two days. The pillars were covered with paper and snowflakes. Cottons were attached to
windows to make it look like there’s snow and frost. Windows and walls were decorated with cutouts

of Christmas-related things. Christmas trees were decorated with ornaments and lights. The stage was
heavily ornated too. The doors leading to the cafeteria were covered with red and green strips of paper.
Snowflakes were hung around the ceiling. Fortunately, we managed to make three banners in such a
short time. Of course, all these couldn’t have happened without everyone’s help. Thank you very much
for helping us and Merry Christmas!

Your Publicity Chairpersons,
Fion S and Cindy C

Games and Gifts - Angel Trees
This year’s angel trees were pretty successful. By Friday, we managed to get 259 gifts and arranged
them in numerical order. By Saturday, we managed to finish all 300 goodie bags, in which contained
soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, pen, pencil, eraser, cookies, chips, chocolate, and letter pad. We also
managed to buy the remaining 36 angel gifts. Fortunately, we didn’t hear any cries of complaints
from any of the kids this year, and it seemed that the kids enjoyed their gifts very much. Thank you to
everyone who bought gifts or donated money. Without you all, the angel trees would not have been
successful this year. Also, thank you to the lower school kindergarten teachers who planned the angel
tree walk to promote the spirit of angel tree gifts. On a final note, we sincerely hope that you all will
participate in this wonderful angel tree event (perhaps again?) next year and help us create another
successful PSB Christmas Party!

Friday Blind School Party Reassessment (12/9)

Filed under: Blind School, Reassessments — 5:31 pm

Almost every teacher made it to the Christmas Party on December 9th! It was really successful!
There were hardly any tardy members. Thus, this year’s Christmas Party was in the Upper
School Library, hence a great atmosphere there. Even though it wasn’t possible to carry the
Christmas tree up to fourth floor, the Library was still full of Christmas spirit. Since everyone
was energetic this time, there weren’t any awkward moments on stage.

These members came and help out the Christmas party really, so they should really be proud
of themselves (pat on the back)! Thanks to all members who made this year’s Christmas Party
successful!
The people who are underlined were really active members in the party. ie performers, emcees,
OC presidents, and officers

Reassessment: Sweatshirts X’mas Sale Dec. 6-7th , 2011

From Dec. 6-7th, we had a sweatshirts sale for Christmas. We set up at 6:30 AM and ended at 4:00 PM. Although it was right before exams, a lot of people still stopped by and came to help throughout the day. We sold 48 shirts and made over 20,000 NT. A special thank you to Mrs. Koh and the parents who came to help at the booths.

Chung-Yi Reassessment (11/27)

Filed under: Chung Yi, Reassessments — 7:18 pm

Salutations to all!

Our THIRD ChungYi outing of the school year occurred last Sunday (11/27). For this outing, we did not have any older kids coming because they were grounded for unknown reasons. Apparently, this year of ChungYi outings is quite revolutionary. We were rained out in MIDDLE of our first outing in 42 years, and this time we had half the kids grounded on us in 42 years… I’m not sure if this is good or bad. I’ll just take it as auspicious.

Because of the gloomy weather, we decided not to take a chance and did not go hiking at Er Zi Ping as planned. The lower school kids came back to school for Ice Age 3 and we laughed our faces off, while the little babies went to a kiddie indoor playground place at Beitou. Ice Age 3 was a big hit as you can tell, and the little babies had a ton of fun at the indoor playground because there was a lot of variety: rock climbing, ball pool, cars, tumbling place, etc.

Overall, I believe that the outing this time went pretty smoothly (maybe it was because we only had small kids). I saw some new faces in our members and many apologies for the sudden change and cancellation of members. Hope you guys can understand~ For lunch, we had a nice 6 course meal made by a restaurant near school. It was very nice and we had the most successful lunch because we had very few leftovers. After that, the lower school kids went up to the Upper Gym to play basketball and the babies went to the kindergarten cave to make candy cane mouse and windmills. I think this time, it was not a particular exciting outing but everyone had time to relax and have fun. And finally, we were all tired after a few hours so we dismissed a bit early, and after sharing some snacks (choco pie and wafers) together we went back to Chungyi~

This time we had a bit of difficulty because we had to cancel a lot of members because of the grounding incident – suddenly our four small buses had to be cut into two, food portions had to be cut, and members had to be called up. The only good thing we got out of this incident was a smaller group to control and more snacks for January’s outing (ehehehe)

But it was okay in the end, and I think this ChungYi outing was possibly the most controlled, calmest outing ever. Anyways, the outing really could NOT have been possible without everyone who came, especially on this Thanksgiving holiday. THANKS guys, you really GAVE during that outing ;)
